What is the story of the town, and of the saint?

The history of San Francisco de los Romo dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when it was a small indigenous village.

In 1575, the Spanish founded the mission of San Francisco de los Romo, with the aim of evangelizing the indigenous people and establishing a center for farming and livestock.

During the colonial period, the town grew and became an important center of agricultural and livestock production. After Mexico’s independence, San Francisco de los Romo continued to grow and became a municipality in 1824.

In the 20th century, the municipality experienced significant economic and demographic growth, thanks to agriculture, livestock and industry. Today, San Francisco de los Romo is a prosperous and dynamic municipality, known for its rich history, culture and traditions.

Meanwhile, Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) was an Italian Catholic religious, founder of the Franciscan Order and patron saint of Italy. He was born in Assisi, Italy, and his original name was Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone.

He was a man of great spirituality and dedication to the poor and sick. He renounced his life of luxury and wealth to follow Jesus Christ and live in poverty and humility.

In 1209, Francis received papal approval for his religious order, which was based on poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Franciscan Order grew rapidly and spread throughout Europe.

Saint Francis of Assisi is known in religious circles for his love of nature and all living beings, and is credited with the miracle of speaking to animals. He is also famous for receiving the stigmata, the marks of Christ’s passion, on his body.

He died in 1226 and was canonized as a saint in 1228.
