Construction is one of the most dangerous industries in New York City and the nation, and workers face a wide range of safety and health risks every day. No workplace is the same, and no matter how many years of experience workers may have, they can still face a new set of safety hurdles with each new workplace they enter.
In general, working conditions in all industries are much more dangerous for Hispanic workers. While an estimated 10% of New York State workers are Latino, in 2019, 20.5% of workers who died on the job were of Hispanic origin, according to the most recent report from NYCOSH.
The New York State construction industry remained highly hazardous to workers in 2019, but the number of deaths decreased slightly since 2016. The number of construction workers who died in the state decreased 5% between 2018 and 2019 , with 58 deaths in 2018 and 55 deaths in 2019.
By contrast, the death toll in New York City construction increased in 2019, for the third year in a row. Twenty-four construction workers died in 2019, compared to 22 in 2018, an increase of 10%.
As a requirement of the Local Law 196 of 2017 , workers at most major construction sites must be able to demonstrate that they have completed OSHA 10 training in the previous five years. On December 1, 2019, workers must have 30 hours of training. By 2020, workers on job sites that require a site safety plan (which includes sites to be designated by a construction superintendent, site safety coordinator, or site safety manager) should receive a minimum of 40 hours of training.

As a reminder, if you are a construction or demolition worker requiring site safety training, you must also complete the Site Safety Orientations and Pre-Shift Safety Meetings required by Sections 3301.11 and 3301.12 of the Building Code. New York City.

WHO DOES NOT NEED TRAINING?
Couriers, flaggers, professional engineers, registered architects, Department licensees, and Department record holders (excluding security professionals) do not need training.
If you fall into one of these categories but are serving as a Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Concrete Safety Manager, Construction Superintendent, or a competent person designated by a Construction Superintendent, then you must receive appropriate training.
While licensees are not required to receive training, employees who work under their direct and ongoing supervision must.
