Fincimex, the financial company belonging to the CIMEX SA comparison, has made an official statement about the technical problems that have caused the suspension of sending remittances to the Islandensuring that the gradual restoration of these has begun.
This confirmation was shared this Friday, February 9, with Facebook users who questioned the financial institution in one of its statements shared online.
“The banks started paying yesterday. Gradually, the service will be restored,” Fincimex assured in its brief response to one of the users.
Despite this response, independent media such as Cuban Newspaper They have managed to confirm with their readers that the problems with the remittance system continue, and that, at least in the cases contacted, the money had not been able to be withdrawn.
Recently, the transnational Western Union, specialized in sending remittances abroad, pointed out that the problems with the island’s banks persist, and that there were no plans to resume remittances to Cuba until next Aprilwhich contradicts the version given by the Castro authorities.
Until now, it is unknown what the exact problems were that caused the suspension of remittances, but it is important to remember that this occurred shortly after the authorities reported an alleged virus sent “from abroad.” which delayed the fuel price increase that was announced at the end of 2023.
Mildre Granadillo de la Torre, First Deputy Minister of Economy and Planning, indicated on that occasion that Cimex detected a cybersecurity threat that affected the computer systems used for fuel marketing.
“There was a cybersecurity incident in the computer systems for the marketing of fuels, the origin of which has been identified as a virus from abroad,” the official said in the newscast.
In addition to suspending the increase in the cost of fuel on the Island, this “virus” also caused it to be canceled the sale of fuel in dollars which had been announced in December of last year, which was going to start on the first day of February.
For now, the situation is precarious, since remittances are vital for the economy in the Greater Antilles, and their suspension affects numerous families who have loved ones abroad.
