The return of fans to the stadiums has lifted the turnover of the European football nobility back to the level before the Corona period. According to the auditing and consulting company Deloitte, the 20 top clubs with the highest turnover achieved total revenues of 9.2 billion euros in the 2021/22 season. This corresponded to an increase in sales of 13 percent compared to the previous season (8.2 billion euros). Matchday revenue increased from 111 million euros from the 2020/21 season to 1.4 billion euros last season.

This emerges from the 26th edition of the Deloitte report “Football Money League”, which was published in London on Thursday. The record mark from the 2018/19 season of 9.3 billion euros was just missed. “European football is on the right track. At the beginning of 2020, the corona pandemic also hit professional football hard. In many countries, games were canceled or took place without spectators. Media revenues also fell away. Overall, this led to a slump in sales, even from top clubs.
The German record champions Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund slipped down the money list: With a total turnover of 653.6 million euros (previous season: 611.4 million), the Munich team lost three places and are now sixth. BVB ranks 13th with a turnover of 356.9 million euros (337.6 million). Last year, the Westphalians were twelfth. Bayern and Borussia are the only German clubs in the top 20. One reason they have slipped is that other leagues opened stadiums earlier.

The Premiere League once again dominates the “Money League” and is represented by eleven clubs. English champions Manchester City remained at the top with 731 million euros (644.9 million). In the previous year, coach Pep Guardiola’s club had taken first place among the football financial giants for the first time. Second is still Real Madrid with 713.8 million euros (640.7 million).
