Does a newborn need a stock fund? A student has a credit card? And how do parents not ruin their children’s financial education? This is what financial experts recommend.

You might think that children and young people can no longer handle money. They fail in mathematics in the Pisa test, they brag online about their Klarna debts, so they pay later or in installments. Others are counting on platforms like TikTok Girl Math. I bought the Taylor Swift tickets 120 days ago, so at 120 euros that’s one euro per day, goes the logic. And expensive gifts and vouchers have just ended up under the Christmas tree, which not everyone knows how to handle.
So there is a lack of financial education. The school is responsible for this. Less than one in five Germans took financial courses in school. That’s why students complain about being able to translate poems into five languages after graduating from high school, but not being able to file tax returns.
