Financial Advice: What principles to follow when choosing a mobile operator

In cooperation with experts from the consumer organization dTest, we bring you some advice and tips on how to deal with the transition from one operator to another.

Company tariff also for family members

Before you decide to make a change, find out what your options and needs are. For example, you can use a favorable company tariff, or the employee tariff of a family member or friend.

“Employee tariffs or tariffs for family members of employees of large organizations can be two or three times more advantageous than publicly available tariffs for ordinary consumers,” said Eduarda Hekšová, director of the consumer organization dTest.

However, if you do not have this option, consider your needs and select a tariff according to them that takes into account the combination of individual services.

Mobile just for calling? Use a prepaid card

If you only need to be on the so-called reception, or you call very little yourself, a prepaid card should suffice.

Although it has its disadvantages – for example, you need to top up your credit, and if it is depleted, you cannot call.

On the other hand, the card can prevent high bills for calling numbers with a special tariff or abroad. You will especially appreciate this in the case of children. Especially for the smaller ones, a prepaid card is the best choice.

Mobile data for “surfers”

Many mobile phone users use their devices for so-called internet surfing, resp. for using various installed applications. If you need data, consider connecting only at home or on the go. Unfortunately, mobile data in the Czech Republic is still expensive compared to comparable countries abroad (for example, Austria, Poland).

Operators sometimes come up with an offer of unlimited data or a larger data package, but more substantial discounts on mobile data have not yet taken place. Many people are therefore forced to look for free Wi-Fi networks available at work, on trains, buses or in public areas, and save their mobile data.

“According to the operators, the offer of mobile data for the Czech market is sufficient, which is allegedly reflected in the fact that users do not even reach the agreed limits. But this is the confusion of consequence for cause. Consumers do not want to exceed the limits of their mobile data for fear of additional costs for purchasing additional data packages. If operators offered higher or unlimited mobile data limits at reasonable prices, users would behave rationally and use their data in a similar way as is happening abroad, “said Hekšová.

The change is simple from April

Once you consider your needs and options, you have a choice of dozens of operators. It can also help you decide which might be best for you independent dTest comparator.

The moment you give notice to your operator, you will get into the category of the so-called leaving user. In many cases, it happens that the operator offers the dissatisfied client improved conditions in order to persuade him to stay.

“Leaving the current operator is quick and easy thanks to the amendment to the Electronic Communications Act effective from 1 April 2020. Both consumers and natural persons in business with a fixed-term contract can do so without risk and usually without sanctions, “added Hekšová.
