At a large rally of coalition supporters in Tel Aviv, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the coalition would “God willing” approve the government’s bill to drastically limit the High Court’s use of the “reasonableness” rule, while assuring the government was also “ready to listen” to those who oppose it.
“We are continuing with this legislation because it is the essence of democracy and, at the same time, we are trying to find a way of dialogue,” said Smotrich, who leads the far-right HaTsionut HaDatit party, in a speech that was meant to be conciliatory while at the same time underlining his determination to push through sweeping legal changes.
“Tomorrow, God willing, in the Knesset of Israel, we will pass by a large majority the Reasonableness Amendment Act, which will enable the Israeli government and popularly elected officials to implement policies and strengthen the State of Israel, Israel’s security, Israel’s economy and the country’s Jewish identity,” Smotrich continued.
Addressing opponents of the judicial overhaul, the finance minister says he sympathizes with “your pain, your real fear and your fear for the State of Israel” because, he explained, he had felt similar feelings when the government did not listen to him at the time of the signing of the Oslo Accords and the Gaza disengagement.
“I promise to behave differently, to listen, to speak, to make a lot of effort so that we remain one people,” assured the ultra-nationalist minister.
“I tell you now about the future, that in order for us to continue to live together here in the State of Israel, we are ready for a real dialogue with an open and willing heart and with a willingness to compromise and concessions on all sides so that in the end we can calm things down and together continue the Zionist effort to protect our country, which we all love and care about. »
