The motivation is great, the test session in the gym is agreed. You can use the appointment to find out how good the studio is. What you should pay attention to.

A gym membership may be the way to go to get moving. How do you find a studio that offers good training conditions? The Health Knowledge Foundation recommends paying attention to these things:

– Individual care

Which devices are right for me? How many reps do I start with the leg press? To find answers to these questions, you first need to know where you are in sports.

Before your first training session, a studio specialist should assess your endurance, strength, and range of motion. Ideally, this results in an individual training plan adapted to sporting goals.

The trainer should also show and explain the exercises and equipment to you at this appointment.

– Qualified personnel

The Health Knowledge Foundation recommends asking in the office what training the trainers have. To ensure good care, the staff must be qualified. This can be a sports science degree or training to be a sports or gymnastics teacher or physiotherapist.

– Choice of exercise equipment

Endurance, strength, flexibility – you should be able to train all of these things in the studio and for that you need different equipment. Cross trainers, treadmills and cycle ergometers are suitable for endurance training. For example, free weights for strength training and wall bars, mats and wobble boards for mobility.

According to the Health Knowledge Foundation, a good study should also offer enough space. This is the case when the training area is divided into several areas, e.g. when the equipment is separated from the dumbbells or there is a separate area for stretching exercises.

– Pay attention to the certifications

There are also seals of approval for gyms. Tüv Süd, for example, certifies studies according to DIN 33961 if they meet certain equipment and function requirements. However, even studies that don’t carry a quality seal often meet these requirements, according to the Health Knowledge Foundation.
