In the palace’s most prestigious hall, 60-year-old Japanese Emperor Naruhito declared that his younger brother is officially crown prince and is the first in line to succeed the throne. “I hereby declare, inside and outside the country, that Prince Fumihito is now the Crown Prince,” said Naruhito. He was dressed in a reddish brown robe, standing next to him was his wife, Empress Masako.
Fumihito, in orange robes, was also accompanied by his wife, Crown Princess Kiko. “I fully recognize my responsibilities as a Crown Prince and will carry out my obligations”,said the 54-year-old crown prince. The ceremony lasted approximately 15 minutes.
