After repeated expeditions, finally an attempt to hold hands the tallest tree in the Amazon rainforest reached up. It took three years to build since it was detected by satellite images.
That special tree is pohon angelim red (Dinizia excelsa). The tree is special because it reaches a height of 88.5 meters or the equivalent of a 25-story building and its tree circumference reaches 9.9 meters. Scientists confirm that the tree is the tallest tree in the Amazon ever identified.
The tree was first detected via satellite imagery in 2019 as part of a 3D mapping project. The tree was so tall that it stood out.

Efforts to find the tree directly have been made since 2020. A team of academics, conservationists and local guides led an expedition to reach the tree’s location deep in the wilderness.
However, after 10 days of traveling on difficult terrain, exhausted, with stocks running out and with team members getting sick, they turned back. To fail.
Another expedition took place on 12-25 September 2022. Only then did this expedition bear fruit.
To get hold of the tree head-on, the researchers traveled 250 kilometers in a small boat along a river with treacherous rapids, as well as a 20-kilometer hike through mountainous woodland.
“That tree is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. It’s just amazing,” said forest engineer Diego Armando Silva of the Federal University of Amapa. AFP.
“You are in the middle of a forest where humans have never set foot before, with a very diverse nature,” he added.
In addition to their extraordinary height, it turns out that every angelim vermelho also plays an extraordinary role in absorbing carbon on earth. Imagine, angelim vermelho is capable of absorbing up to 40 tons of carbon, equivalent to the total carbon that can be absorbed by 300-500 small trees. Meanwhile, the tree only occupies an area of about 20 trees.
However, giant tree in the Amazon still in danger. Angelim vermelho wood is highly prized by woodcutters. Additionally, the Iratapuru nature reserve area has illegal gold miners that are notoriously destructive.
