Studies have also shown that the vaccine is generally safe, according to both companies.

“At a time when hundreds of thousands of people are being infected on a global scale every day, we urgently need to deliver a safe and effective vaccine to the world,” said Albert Burla, head of Pfizer.

Last week, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that the vaccine they developed was 90% effective, according to preliminary research.

Regulatory approval is required before the vaccine can be used.
