With the Eiffel Tower lit up in the background, Macron just thanked his supporters for their support. He was greeted with loud cheers and singing on the podium, which had been set up especially for the speech. In his speech, Macron mentioned the dissatisfaction among many voters about current politics. He acknowledged that many eligible voters had stayed home these elections, and said he was also aware that many people had voted for him just to block Le Pen. He promised to do things differently in his new term. “The next few years will not be a continuation of my first term.”
Macron also said he understood the supporters of the radical right-wing candidate Le Pen. She had acted as a counterpart, who wanted to implement major reforms and stood up for ‘the ordinary Frenchman’. “Their anger must be acknowledged,” Macron said. “I will be a president for all the French,” he said. “No one is left behind.”
Macron is the first French president in 20 years to be re-elected for a second term.
