Tennis player Barbora Strýcová played the last competitive match of her career in singles. The 37-year-old native of Pilsen lost twice to Estonian Kaia Kanepiová 4:6 in the 1st round of the US Open Grand Slam as part of the final stop of her farewell tour. Barbora Krejčíková was also eliminated in New York, who was not good enough for the Italian Lucia Bronzettiová. She lost to the 76th player in the world in two hours and 10 minutes 4:6, 6:7.
Against Kanepiová, Strýcová did not have a good start and lost the first serve in the match.
Although the Czech tennis player improved after that, she was no longer able to “break” her opponent and lost the first set in 45 minutes.
Also in the second set, Strýcová fought and led 3:1. However, she was unable to confirm the break and lost her serve once more in the ninth game. Kanepiová then used the third match point.
Strýcová returned to the tennis courts after a maternity break this April. She chose the US Open as the last tournament in her career.
In July, she won the doubles title at Wimbledon with Taiwanese teammate Sie Shu-wei. In the summer, she also said goodbye to her home fans as part of the Livesport Prague Open tournament.
The former world number one in doubles will finally say goodbye in New York in doubles alongside Markéta Vondroušová.
Krejčíková, the two-time winner of last year’s Roland Garros, deepened her unsuccessful season so far.
The 27-year-old player from Ivančice, who has been struggling with an ankle injury in recent weeks, lost her fourth match in a row.
In the duel with Bronzetti, who was three years younger, she paid for 49 unforced errors. Not even the comeback from 0:4 in the second set helped her. She lost 3:7 in the shortened game.
Krejčíková was eliminated in the opening phase of the Grand Slam for the second time this season, she did not make it past the 1st round at Roland Garros this year either. In Wimbledon, she had to give up in the 2nd round due to an injury.
