24 years later and after an intense controversy, one of the symbols of Vazquismo, the tourist tram of A Coruña, definitely goes down in history. Today the City Council of A Coruña has approved in the governing board the termination of the service and the settlement of the contract, which will entail a disbursement for the City Council of about half a million euros to the concessionaire, the Tram Company. A compensation that comes from the expenses derived from the suspension of the service, the previous operating expenses and the legal interests. It remains to add the amount corresponding to the current year. Accounts that include personal bills and also water, electricity and telephone bills since 2011.
The tram began to circulate in 1996, at the whim of the former socialist mayor Francisco Vázquez and he stopped doing it with one of the PP, Carlos Negreira, who suspended him in July 2011. The Council’s argument to suppress him is that it is a inefficient and unsustainable service, is deteriorated and the catenary that supports it is dismantled.
The current mayor Ines Rey has already removed several of its lanes within the transformation of the promenade. Part of the agreement with Tranvías is that the warehouse of the garages, located on the Torre promenade, and all the material stored in it, including historical vehicles, will become the property of the City Council within a month. The tram was born with the intention of being a tourist incentive, something that the local government discards since the cities are currently betting “by other modes of transport of alternative and more efficient energy“.
