Final Fantasy XVI work delayed by covid

Work on Final Fantasy XVI – the next game in the critically acclaimed role-playing game series – is going a little slower than expected. Originally, Square Enix was to reveal new details about the game now towards the end of the year, but that will not be the case.

In a open letter to the fans producer Naoki Yoshida explains that it is the corona pandemic that continues to put sticks in the wheels of game production.

– In an attempt to limit the effects of covid-19, we have let the employees get started on their work tasks from home. Unfortunately, this has affected communication via the Tokyo office, which in turn has led to delays in – and in extreme cases, cancellations of – deliveries from our external partners, writes Yoshida.

According to Yoshida, the development work has been postponed by about half a year. Nevertheless, the producer now believes that everything is going much better, and the team is working to improve both the graphics and the combat system, as well as to finish the movie sequences in the PlayStation 5 game.

The next big load of information about the game will come sometime in the spring of 2022. Then the goal is to build up excitement before the game’s launch, but exactly when it will be is still uncertain.
