Both candidates will try to highlight their main proposals and convince the electorate that did not vote for either of them in the October elections.
One week before the ballot that will define who will be the new president of Argentina, the candidates from Unión por la Patria (UxP), Sergio Massa, and from La Libertad Avanza (LLA), Javier Milei, will star today in the last mandatory debate.
The final television fight, before the second round scheduled for the 19th of this month, will concentrate great expectations in the last stretch of an electoral process that had its first chapter with the open, simultaneous and mandatory primaries (PASO) last August and a second instance, on October 22 last.
THE PREVIOUS PATH
Along this path, three other candidates for the Casa Rosada were out of competition last month, the ruling party reversed the uninspiring results it had obtained in the PASO and the game of alliances in the opposition was reconfigured, after the agreement between the LLA and a PRO sector, which also divided waters in Together for Change (JxC).
In this key instance, prior to the runoff, the obligatory debate will take place tomorrow between Massa and Milei, who must explain what their central policies will be -if they enter the Government- around six axes: Economy; Argentina’s relations with the world; Education and health; Production and Work; Security and Human Rights and Democratic Coexistence.
The meeting will begin at 9 p.m. in the Assembly Hall of the Buenos Aires headquarters of the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA).
DYNAMIC
It will be the third time that Massa and Milei compete face to face in front of the audience, in an exchange that can be seen on any of the channels or platforms that have requested to have the signal, after accepting the transmission protocol with the National Electoral Chamber ( CNE), the application authority.
The dynamics of Sunday’s debate – agreed upon by the competing political forces – will have similarities with the previous crossings, held on October 1 in Santiago del Estero and on the 8th of that month in the City of Buenos Aires, although now, as it is only two candidates, each one will have more exposure time.
In this scheme, an initial minute is planned for each applicant to make a presentation and, then, a total of 12 minutes (6 minutes for each one), in which the candidates will be able to manage the time as they wish to refer to the 6 axes. thematic.
The debate starts at 9 p.m. at the UBA Faculty of Law.
PRESENTATION
In the last few hours, Milei’s team made a presentation to the CNE authorities, requesting clarification of the regulations in relation to respect in the use of the rival’s word, as LLA spokespersons informed Télam.
In response, from UxP, the vice chief of staff and attorney, Juan Manuel Olmos, sent a note to the court in which he recalled that the rules of the debate “were already consented to and accepted” by the representatives of both spaces.
In the note, it is highlighted that “forty-eight (48) hours after the debate of candidates required by law 27,337, it is not transparent to the public that any of the parties intends to reinterpret the established and published rules that will govern its development.”
BY DRAW
A public draw held at the CNE defined the distribution of the lecterns and the order of presentation: Massa will be the first to appear and then Milei will have his time.
As for the locations, the Libertarian candidate will be on the lectern on the left (from the viewer’s perspective), while the UxP candidate will be on the lectern on the right.
It was also determined that as soon as any of the applicants finishes their 6-minute presentation (on the 6 thematic axes), the opponent will be able to speak to contrast their ideas, although they will only have two minutes available for that intervention.
THEMES
The first block will be dedicated to Economy, Argentina’s relations with the world and Education and Health and the second will deal with Production and Work, Security and Human Rights and Democratic Coexistence.
In the final segment, Massa and Milei will have two minutes each to close their dissertation in front of the audience, in an exchange that is estimated to last a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Since 2016, with the passing of the law, the mandatory nature of the presidential debate was formalized and the CNE became the organizer of the activity.
No pointers or helpmemory
For tonight’s television dispute, the CNE established that Massa and Milei will not be able to read notes or have memory aids on their respective lecterns, but they will have the possibility of moving when they speak.
It is presumed that this last confrontation will attract a large volume of viewers, something that was already observed in the first debate on October 1, when 44 rating points were totaled, with the sum of all the air channels.
On that occasion, in addition to Massa and Milei, the three candidates for the Casa Rosada who were out of competition in the presidential elections of last October 22 had participated: Patricia Bullrich (Together for Change), Myriam Bregman (Frente de Izquierda) and Juan Schiaretti (We do for Our Country).
That time, the four opposition candidates directed their messages to question the Government and, on the contrary, the official candidate focused his speech on his management proposals.
A week later, on October 8, the second debate arrived – just two weeks before the presidential elections – which showed a tone similar to the first.
In both races, the topics under discussion were: Economy; Education; Human rights and democratic coexistence; Security; Work and production; and Human development, housing and environmental protection.
The moderators of the third presidential debate will be journalists Luciana Geuna (Canal 13), Antonio Laje (América), Pablo Vigna (TV Pública) and Érica Fontana (Telefé).
