The score was opened by Luke Shaw, who in the 2nd minute scored the fastest goal of the final matches of the European Championships. After more than an hour of play, Leonardo Bonucci called. The hero in the shootout was Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who caught English penalties in the fourth and fifth series.
The Italians have stretched the series without losing to 34 duels. Italy repeated the success of 1968, when it defeated Yugoslavia 2-0 in a repeated final match. The battle for the European title failed in 2000 and 2012.
England played their premier finals at the European Championships, but did not end the wait for the second big trophy after the 1966 World Cup triumph.

The duel started with an inaccurate pass Maguire. The same player averted a subsequent corner kick and the English opened the score in a flash from the counterattack. From the depths of the field, Kane, a striker, ran him, who passed Trippier to the right, and Shaw pushed through the center with a demanding half-volley with the help of a pole and scored the fastest goal in the history of the European Championships. Italy lost in the tournament for the first time and was still in danger from the compact English. In the beginning, their coach Southgate paid off a move with the inclusion of Trippier, who cooperated well with the tracker Walker and bombed the Italian sixteenth center as a right wing defender. The “Azure” attacked hard, but even after losing the ball, their opponents filled the space and did not let them into advantageous shooting positions. In the 35th minute, he tried for a moment of surprise with the individual action of Chies, who got rid of Rice with a clever handle and from behind the sixteenth left only narrowly missed the space of three poles. Although the Italians did not lend the ball much to the opponents, but despite the optical superiority they could not decide the condensed English defense, their isolated shooting attempts were only a virtue out of necessity and did not endanger Pickford in the first half.
After a change of sides, Sterling showed quick legs, Bonucci helped himself with a defensive intervention at the age of sixteen, the English striker commanded the ground too willingly and the main referee Kuipers did not give him an eleven. In the opposite end, the Italians won a direct kick a short distance behind the penalty area, but Insigne did not handle it well and did not hit the goal. The losing team reacted shortly after the change of sides with two substitutions, Cristante and Berardi ran on the lawn instead of Barella with Immobil. With 62 minutes played, Itali nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar. Italy started to tighten the bolts and the possession of the ball took place in the 67th minute. A well placed corner kick from Berardi was followed by Berellini’s hard but accurate header. The second-half dominance of the blue jerseys continued, and the clueless England seemed happy that he would lead the match into overtime. Berardi made a run for the goal 73 minutes into the game but the home team’s far left defense managed to sort the situation out in the end. At the end of regular playing time, England withdrew into a deep block and survived the Italian onslaught.
At the beginning of the overtime, no team tried to decide at all costs. After a mistake by the Italians in the middle of the field, the opportunity arose for the English, Sterling ran into the penalty area, his pass was blocked by Chiellini. This resulted in a corner kick, after which Phillips fired from the second wave right next to it. Coming in from the left, 103 minutes into the match, Pickerson almost managed to squeeze a goal past the visitors’ keeper, but the alert Belotti blocked it to keep the score level. In extra time, in England’s submission, it was no longer just about waiting and the struggle for knowledge was more balanced. With 108 minutes played, Donnarumma nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar.
The winner had to be determined by an eleven shot, in which Belotti did not score in the second series, in the third Rashford rod hit. In the fourth Donnarumma, he caught Sancho, kept Pickford’s English chances alive against Jorginh, but in the fifth series, the Italian goalkeeper also eliminated Saku’s shot.
Votes after the match:
Roberto Mancini, coach of Italy: “A quick goal caused us problems. But then we started to dominate. My players played fantastically, they were amazing. The title is significant for our entire country. ”
Gareth Southgate, England coach: “I am really disappointed to lose. We missed the last step. We win and we play together as a team. We trained the elevens, but they are lotteries. Sending Saku for the fifth penalty was my decision. ”
