“A model road using new technology.” For example, Minister Riad Nurmohamed of Public Works (OW) spoke on Tuesday 30 November 2021 at the second final delivery of the redesigned Nieuwweergevondenweg. This final delivery follows the first delivery in May 2020 and the department is now fully responsible for this important connection road between Paramaribo and Wanica North-West. The minister speaks of a model that will also be used for the rehabilitation of other roads.
This will also improve road safety on the roads. The redesigned Nieuwweergevondenweg includes elevated footpaths and bicycle paths made of striking red polyflex. Minister Nurmohamed thanked contractor Caremco for the patience that has been shown. He says that the government is not in favor of projects that are too long, but contracts that are completed within the technically set time. The minister indicates that there are contractors who want to start their projects, while there are others who are still waiting for payment. The government will make up the financing arrears in a private public partnership (PPP) with these contractors.
Minister Nurmohamed emphasizes that every project must be budgeted and covered by law. He noted that a number of projects will be completed in the coming weeks and others will be launched. According to him, this is all within laws and regulations. The minister asks for patience for large investment projects, because this requires good research and preparation. In addition, his ministry wants to carry out projects that are the people’s choices. In this context, Public Works will agree with district commissioners of all districts on what should be carried out in their administrative area.
Both District Commissioner Fulgence Javinde of Paramaribo South-West and Suraksha Sital-Hirasingh of Wanica North-West call for economical use of the Nieuwweergevondenweg. Javinde asks motorized road users to watch their driving behaviour. Hirasingh speaks of a special moment. She also points out the importance of the street as a connecting road, not only that, but also the economic activities that take place there.
Santosh Soman, director of Civil Engineering Works (CTW) of OW explains that after the first delivery, the contractor remained responsible for the maintenance of the road. After the second delivery, the responsibility rests entirely with the ministry. In the meantime, the road has been cleaned up, the sewers tackled, subsidence repaired and the polyflex section of the cycle path completed.
The rehabilitation of Nieuwweergevondenweg is the result of an integral plan for the redevelopment of roads.
