Philippine senators have expressed mixed reactions to the potential revival of a joint exploration agreement between China and the Philippines for oil and gas deposits in the disputed West Philippine Sea. Sen. Grace Poe has suggested considering other foreign partners, while Sen. Francis Escudero thinks differences with China shouldn’t get in the way of cooperation efforts. Sen. Francis Tolentino has urged the government to be wary of the deal due to China’s illegal presence in the country’s exclusive economic zone. The Philippines and China have competing claims in the region, which is known to be rich in natural gas and oil reserves, as well as other marine resources.
