Films from this year’s Karlovy Vary festival can be viewed online

“Those who didn’t make it to the movies or didn’t come to Vary have a ten-day chance to taste what the audience could see here in Vary,” said KVIFF.TV executive director Ivo Andrle.

On the KVIFF.TV platform, from July 10 to 20, it is possible to watch, for example, the British-American film All inclusive with Paul Mescal in the lead role, which already caught the eye at this year’s Cannes festival, or the Bolivian drama Utama, which won prize at this year’s Sundance festival.

“But it will also be Jaromír Jireš’s film Žert, which had its world premiere in a restored version just in Karlovy Vary, or the film Záře, for which Geoffrey Rush, a guest of this year’s festival, received an Oscar,” added KV IFF artistic director Karel Och.

According to Andrle, this approach is unique within film festivals. “The selection is relatively rare, I don’t know of anywhere in the world that a festival would give such a chance to the audience right after its end,” he mentioned.

Movies all year round

The online festival television KVIFF.TV is also expanding with a year-round offer of proven films that have been curated by the Karlovy Vary festival team. Their online video library offers individual images for purchase as well as the option of monthly and annual subscriptions.

“It will not only be about the films themselves, but there are already over 800 videos on the platform that accompany the films and that explain why the films are on the platform,” explained Andrle.

According to Och, the idea of a year-round online film library of the festival arose for a long time as a possibility to expand the classic model of projections and distribution. “We want to master the digital, we want to control it in such a way that we can combine it with a physical experience,” he said, adding that in the future they would also like to offer online the films that premiered at the Karlovy Vary festival.

“In the near future, we would like to buy a film that would premiere at the Karlovy Vary festival, and after its end, we would like to present it in cinemas and in classical distribution not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Central and Eastern Europe, and later transfer them to the KVIFF platform .TV. Therefore, we would like to extend the life of the film and thereby become interesting for rights owners and directors,” added Och.
