The filmmaker says that one of the boss characters in Resident Evil Village imitated a monster design he designed for the horror film Frankenstein’s Army (2013).

In a post on Linkedin, Raaphorst claimed that one of the character designs from the film had been used completely without permission or credit, before giving a comparison of the two monsters.

Daniel Ponce and Robin Hemmersbach joined in by confirming that Capcom credits Frankenstein’s Army for the game’s character inspiration, in a concept art file that opens when the game is over.

Twitter user CloneKorp also posted a thread comparing other monsters to designs from Frankenstein’s Army, in an attempt to highlight some other similarities.

“At first I was annoyed,” said Raaphorst in an interview with Eurogamer. Then I felt proud. Now, I see all the reactions and I feel annoyed again, and humiliated. It’s very difficult to come up with a great design, “he said.

According to Eurogamer’s interview with Raaphorst, the directors did not own the creative rights to the films, as they were owned by the MPI Media Group, the distribution and financial group that Raaphorst worked with at Frankenstein’s Army.

In a recent interview, Resident Evil Village producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said that some of the game’s scarier elements had been reduced, after receiving a response from fans,

“Some of the responses we received regarding Resident Evil 7 were too scary to play with,” he said.

He added, “At the same time, it has always been our aim to create something that makes anyone feel comfortable playing, so we reduce the tension element in Resident Evil Village compared to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, so that players are not always afraid,” he said.
