Many of us still get goosebumps just remembering the no less beautiful OST by Gladiator (2000), the one in which the epic verses of Hans Zimmer shake hands with the spirituality and beauty of the voice of Lisa Gerard in an unmistakable and unique way. And it is that, despite more than two decades having passed since his premiere, the cult classic that he has signed Ridley Scott It continues to be a landmark and its influence on other subsequent titles speaks for itself.
That is why in these twenty years we are incredibly surprised that no sequel proposals have taken root on the famous director’s relevant to-do list, even if there were, as a crazy version of Gladiator 2 written none other than Nick Cave, in which the famous Máximo Décimo Meridio manages to earn eternal life after a pact with the gods, and ends up participating as a fighter in World War II and Vietnam (!?). You can read the rest of this shit herewhich, of course, was rejected by Scott himself.
Anecdotes aside, and although that good old Cave, the director responsible for iconic films such as Alien: the eighth passenger (1979) or Blade Runner (1982) continued to have the idea of bringing back to the big screen, in one way or another, the story of the most emblematic gladiator of the seventh art. It was already 2021 when, even without having finished or published his latest project (Luggagelater titled Napoleonin which Joaquin Fenice would play the aforementioned French chancellor), the director, probably influenced by having worked again with the aforementioned actor, issued the order that his next project would, in fact, be Gladiator 2: “I’m writing the next “Gladiator” now, so by the time I’m done with Napoleon, it’ll be done.“Scott said to empire magazine In an interview.
Now, and almost closing out the year, hand in hand with Coil world We get confirmation that the director (who just turned 85) is immersed in the pertinent negotiations that will bring that long-awaited sequel even closer to its long-awaited confirmation. For now we only know the director’s wishes to start filming in May 2023 and do it in Morocco, thus going back behind the scenes of the project and also counting on Darius Wolsky as cinematographer (who has already done the same for other joint titles with Scott, such as House of Gucci, Prometheus or the aforementioned and most recent, still awaiting publication, Napoleon), and Peter Craig (The Hunger Games, The Crown) as a screenwriter.
