Filmhaus Frankfurt and Film- und Kinobüro Hessen Launch Film Production and Cinema Advice Service

Filmhaus Frankfurt and Film- und Kinobüro Hessen now offer advice on all aspects of film production and cinema. The service, which was set up on July 17, will initially run until the end of the year. The managing director of the film house, Felix Fischl, said that he is aimed at all interested parties, from development, production and distribution advice to career information for newcomers or career changers. The first inquiries ran. According to Fischl, the service is intended as a first aid and overview – not as a competitor to professional service providers or as a substitute for other funding. In addition, seminars and lectures are offered, but the focus is on personal and individual advice.

This form of advice emerged from the experiences of the past two years: During the pandemic, the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art set up a corona advice service for the cultural scene in 2021. The various state associations such as the state music council or the state association for the independent performing arts had bundled their advisory services under this umbrella.

The Hessen Film initiative, represented by Film- und Kinobüro and Filmhaus, had bundled offers for filmmakers in the state. The project was continued in 2022, for which 200,000 euros of state funds were made available. “We don’t try to reinvent anything”

For the film, which now has its own subpage on the site, the offer is to be expanded, for which the 40,000 euros state funds are being used, which went to the Hessen Film initiative this year. In 2024 there will probably be a new edition of the Hessen Cultural Advisory Service.

While the focus during the pandemic was primarily on advice on subsidies, aid and tax and processing issues, it is now a matter of making the cultural and thus also the film scene in Hesse more resilient and further professionalizing, according to Fischl. Instead of relying on a single person who covers all areas of advice, the offer for the film is multiplied. There are many professionals in the professional world for production, rental and other fields. The Filmhaus conveys this about how to optimize resources there and at the same time help in a more targeted manner. This should also be used to evaluate after the end of the year where there is the greatest need.

All film professionals who were asked if they would like advice were willing to take part. Among them are Hannes Karnick, long-standing representative of the documentary film working group in Hesse, Karin Haase and Karl-Eberhard Schäfer from U5 film production and Jutta Veit and Julia Peters from Jip Film. “We’re not trying to reinvent anything, but to place it in a clear context.” The respective professionals receive a fee for their advice.
