The Northern Lights were filmed over the Russian city of Murmansk. The optical phenomenon can be likened to a strikingly beautiful dance of multicolored lights in the sky. The footage shows huge streaks of green and white lights mixed with purple, shot north of the Arctic Circle.

Auroras usually occur at an altitude of 90-130 km above the Earth’s surface. The amazingly beautiful natural phenomenon is the result of the collision between charged particles of the solar wind with the Earth’s magnetic field, which is strongest in the polar regions.
It is also called aurora borealis, which literally means “Dawn of the North” in Latin. This is the scientific name for the aurora borealis in the northern hemisphere.
