Film Zone: Gay characters in Hollywood are not new

Announcement

In the Middle East and West Asia, the movie “Lightyear” was banned due to the inclusion of a kiss between two women in one of its scenes. In Panama, some spoke in favor and others against.

You have to understand that Islam is the predominant religion in the countries where the film was censored… It’s understandable.

There are very different cultural and religious aspects, I will give you an example:

For Muslims the crusades were barbaric. They did not understand how the kings of the West sent children en masse to face armies of expert warriors.

Exposed this cultural point -that there are thousands-. The film company of the Mouse Miguelito -as it was known in Latin America in the mid-twentieth century-, has received a series of criticisms for including gender ideology aimed at children.

I say gender ideology, which is very different from the struggle of the LGTBI movement that has faced sexual discrimination around the world for decades.

Picking up the thread, it is not new, Hollywood includes homosexual characters.

In the middle of the 20th century, cinema was divided into several genres; epic cinema -Hercules, The Ten Commandments, Spartacus, among others-; western cinema -Río Rojo, Río Bravo, Caravan of women, The man who killed Liberty Valance, among others-, war films -The longest day, Twelve from the gallows, From here to eternity, Paths of glory, among others- , clarified that this genre has many subgenres.

Actors like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston, Lee Van Cleef, were male references, the tough guys in the movies, the ones that all children wanted to imitate.

But what many don’t know is that Charlton Heston, who played Marco Antonio, Moisés, El Cid, Juan, el Bautista, George Taylor in Planet of the Apes, gave life to a homosexual character in 1959.

When I was a kid and didn’t have cable at Easter, you had to watch the Bible movies, including Ben-Hur.

About 15 years old, I noticed that the friendship between Judah, Ben-Hur and Messala was very strong.

The newspaper El País reported in April 2019 that “considered the greatest Roman movie ever filmed, Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959), the two men had been lovers. Charlton Heston, who played Judah Ben-Hur, had a furious reaction when told of the homoerotic connotations. Still today, 60 years after the film’s release, the performances are passionate and disparate.”

According to the note, Heston was unaware for a long time that he was playing a gay character.

The difference was that at that time the most subtle context was handled. Personally, I don’t agree that a gender ideology is imposed on children’s movies or series like the Muppets, where Gonzo, after decades of being in love with Peggy, suddenly became a Trans icon.

What would happen if a producer suddenly incorporated Sean Connery’s James Bond personality into a children’s show? It’s obvious that half the world would be against it, Bond has evolved from a macho and womanizing type to a more contemporary character.

Movies are a business and if the “Lightyear” movie is a box office success, it will follow this inclusive trend, if it isn’t, they obviously won’t continue.

If someone has something against this type of movies, don’t watch them, period, you shouldn’t go to the extreme of insulting those who do like it.
