Cannes (dpa) – Oops! Spike Lee, president of this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury, accidentally revealed the winning film early on.
When the host of the closing gala asked him on Saturday night what the first prize was to be announced, the American replied: “The film that won the Palme d’Or is ‘Titane'” – and the other jury members shrugged visible together. Excited people whispered on stage and the first thing to be honored was Caleb Landry Jones as best actor for “Nitram”.
But many asked themselves: had the 64-year-old already announced the main prize? He did. That only became clear when the Palme d’Or really was awarded later that evening: to “Titane” by the French Julia Ducournau. It is only the second time in the history of the festival that a film by a director has been awarded the Palme d’Or.
