Film: Quentin Tarantino: A film icon turns 59

Quentin Tarantino’s style is as simple as it is ingenious. With recurring means, he manages to captivate his viewers and grow into a phenomenon himself.

His ninth film was released in cinemas in 2019 with “Once Upon Time in Hollywood”. As always, a great success, as evidenced by two Golden Globe awards. With his book of the same name, the Hollywood director has also been a novelist since last year. Quentin Tarantino turns 59 today.

Written between video boxes to success

Tarantino, who as a film director is also familiar with almost all tasks on the film set, saw the light of day in 1963 in difficult circumstances in Knoxville, Tennessee. His mother, who had him when he was 16, moved with him to Los Angeles, where Tarantino spent his childhood and youth.

The film business had fascinated him from an early age. In addition to acting lessons, he acquired an immense knowledge of films. At the age of 16 he broke off his school career and got hired in a video rental company, where he could fully devote himself to his passion.

Between all the videos and late nights spent behind the counter, he started writing his first films. In 1993, he released True Romance, which he wrote while working shifts at the video store ten years earlier. A year earlier he made his film debut on the big screen with “Reservoir Dogs”. At the beginning of the 1990s he was also regularly seen as an Elvis impersonator in the TV series “Golden Girls” and gained first notoriety.

“Pulp Fiction” was just the beginning

In 1994, the eccentric artist made his breakthrough with his work “Pulp Fiction”. The film grossed over $100 million. An Oscar for best screenplay and the Palme d’Or in Cannes were the first major awards in Tarantino’s successful career. Over the years, large and influential productions for the film industry followed, such as “Kill Bill”, “Inglourious Basterds”, “Django Unchained” and “The Hateful Eight”. In 2012 he won another Oscar with “Django Unchained”.

Quentin Tarantino’s style is hard to compare. He works with great film quotes, regular bloodbaths are staged and black humor runs through his films. In his works, he repeatedly provides references to B-movies, from which he partly draws his inspiration. As an auteur filmmaker, he endeavors to take on most of the tasks on the set himself. Tarantino himself can be seen in some strips, but mostly only with minor appearances in the background. Actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson or Christoph Walz appear again and again in his films.

Private now bound

In the private sphere, it has become quiet around Quentin Tarantino. After repeated speculation about affairs with well-known women, he has been together with the Israeli singer Danielle Pick since 2009. The couple married in Los Angeles in 2018. In 2020, the couple celebrated the birth of their son in Tel Aviv.
