Film on the Extraordinary Life of Sister Maria Rosa Legole, ‘Mother Teresa of Honduras’, Releases in US Theaters

Washington D.C: The film ‘With This Life’, which marks the life of Sister Maria Rosa Legole, a Franciscan nun in Honduras, who has provided a home for orphans for over eighty-seven years, has hit the theaters. The legendary life she led until her death due to Covid-19 in 2020 at the age of 93 earned her the title of Mother Teresa of Honduras. The life of this holy spirit from Central America will be released in US theaters on August 11.

Born on November 26, 1926 to a French Canadian father and a Honduran mother, Maria’s life was turned upside down when her father abandoned the family before she was a year old. Unable to raise her daughter, her mother abandoned her in the yard of a nearby orphanage. During her life in that orphanage, she met two nuns who were members of the ‘School Sisters of St. Francis’ monastic community at the age of six, which changed her life.

She used to inquire of her parish priest about those whom she had not seen since that day. Sensing the girl’s interest, the priest persuaded her to enter the sannyasa life. Later, all her prayers to the Virgin Mary were for finding those sisters. One day after praying, she could not believe her eyes. The nuns he had been looking for for so long before his eyes!

She revealed her desire to them. But they were not ready to admit her into the monastic community who did not even have basic faith. But Maria’s decision was to pray constantly and wait. Finally, at the age of 21, they granted her membership in their monastic order. They then sent Maria to train at their novitiate house in Americat, Wisconsin.

On June 13, 1949, she received the nun’s garb and returned to Honduras. Sister Maria’s early ministry was in a hospital in Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital and largest city. In the meantime, she was suffering from the pain of orphan life and could not help but see the children lying on the streets without anyone.

Thus, amid long days of prayer and waiting, with the permission of the authorities, Sister Maria started the first 10 homes for orphans in 1960 without even a single dollar in hand. Later, with the help of various individuals and organizations in North America, she expanded her work to more places.

Along with that, they had to face opposition from many people including the drug mafia. They also killed a Canadian priest who worked with the Sisters. But nothing scared them and they spread their activities to more places. When she finally passed away in 2020, she had established 500 orphanages, many hospitals, schools and medical clinics from one end of the country to the other.

The makers of the film hope that the legendary life of Sister Maria Rose will be an extraordinary direct testimony of God’s love when the film is set in the background of the experiences of many people whose lives were changed by her intervention.
