Film – New price for non-English language films – Culture

Los Angeles (AP) – In Hollywood, a new prize is to be awarded for non-English language films. As of 2022, the best international productions will be honored with the “World Movie Awards”, as announced by the renowned Critics Choice Association (CCA) in Los Angeles.

Plans for this worldwide honor had been forged for several years, it said. “It’s time to celebrate the best cinematic stories produced outside of Hollywood,” said CCA Chairman Joey Berlin in the announcement.

Criticism of the Globe Association: Lack of diversity

The announcement also criticized the pressurized HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association), which traditionally awards the Golden Globes. The Association of Foreign Press consists of almost 100 journalists and film critics who have been working in Hollywood for many years. The small group had been sharply criticized in recent months for lack of diversity and non-transparent membership criteria.

Many reporters who work for foreign film publications were not welcome at the HFPA, said Joey Berlin. The Critics Choice Association has now added dozens of journalists to help determine the direction of the “World Movie Awards”. With almost 500 members, the CCA is the largest film and television critics association in the USA and Canada.

In March the association presented the “Critics Choice Awards” for the 26th time. The later Oscar winner “Nomadland” won a total of four awards, including best film in the top category.
