In 2013, the Gelnhausen cinema was awarded the Hessian Cinema Prize. The Hessian Ministry of Science and Art recognized the cinema as an important cultural institution in the region that is characterized by consistent program quality and creative energy.

A look back: The history of the Gelnhausen cinema

The Gelnhausen cinema, originally founded as a “Casino – Lichtspiele” by Georg and Rosa Schneevogl, opened its doors on October 3, 1924 with the silent film “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World”, accompanied by piano music. Over the years, cinema has achieved numerous milestones:

  • 1932: First sound film in Gelnhausen.
  • 1937: First color film “Ramona” in the cinema.
  • 1940: Berta and Artur Schneevogl take over the cinema.
  • 1952: Opening of the new Park-Lichtspiele building (Pali).
  • 1957: The cinema was continued by Berta Schneevogl and later her son Hanspeter Schneevogl.
  • 1974: Reopening of the casino – light games.
  • 1982: Fire in the upper rooms of the “Pali Discotheque”.
  • 2007: Reconstruction of the Pali. and digitalization

Special promotions to mark the 100th anniversary of the Gelnhausen cinema

For its 100th anniversary, the Gelnhausen cinema is planning a series of special events to celebrate this special event together with its loyal customers:

  • Golden tickets: Numerous golden tickets are hidden in the cinema’s catchment area, which grant those who find them 100 days of free entry. You can find out exactly where the tickets can be found on the cinema’s social media channels.
  • Surprise performance for children: On Thursday, October 3rd and Friday, October 4th, a surprise film for children will be shown at 11 a.m. Entry is free!
  • Champagne reception for “Film Art”: On Tuesday evening, October 8th, there will be a small champagne reception at Filmkunst.
