“Until We Return” – Life on Canna

The film club continues despite the dramatic cinema location. With film culture and with ZeLIG and BFFB.

by Renate Mumelter

“Until We Return” is a film title, but it could just as easily be the motto of the film club’s online initiative that started on Thursday. For the series “Non molliamo – let’s go on”, the film club sought and found cooperation with the ZeLIG film school and the Bolzano film festival. Works from the Bolzano film school will be shown. There are also discussions with the authors.

Martin Telser

“I think it’s great that the film club is finally starting again,” says Martin Telser, the director of the film with the meaningful title “Until We Return”. The film is a corona victim. He should have run twice at the BFFB, and he was also invited to other festivals. But then came the pandemic and the end of cinemas and festivals. Martin Telser says that this online initiative is “a great opportunity to show the film to a larger audience” for him.

Until We Return

Martin Telser’s graduation film was made in 2019, in a time without Corona. It tells of young and old people who live in a lockdown-like seclusion on the island of Canna. The pantry must always be well filled. Shopping is only possible when the ferry arrives. The weather determines whether she will come, and north-east of Scotland that is definitely moody. The ferry from the mainland takes two hours. A quick leap into town is unthinkable. The people on Canna have to get along with each other and with themselves. 400 people used to live here, today there are fewer than 20, younger and older. They tell why they are there. In “Until We Return” there is also talk of the magic of the cinema. Some islanders miss it.

The images in the film breathe space, a space that could live better on the screen. With a little imagination, you can also use the PC. I wish the film and the talk between Martin Telser and Angelika König as much audience as possible.

Go on

The series “Non molliamo – Go on” will run until April 1st. “Until We Return” will follow next Thursday, a work that will take you back to Bolzano in 2007, right in the middle of the life of the Gabrielli Sinti family, who were then housed on a building site. In 2006 the association “Nevo Drom” was founded, whose president is Radames Gabrielli, one of the protagonists of the film. In a talk with Brigitte Hofer, director Giuseppe Schettino will talk about himself and his project.

The magic word: cooperation

The fact that it was possible for the film club to get this series off the ground (the funds are extremely tight due to a lack of income) is thanks to the successful cooperation and the commitment of many volunteers. They made their skills available against oblivion and for film culture.

Film culture is not just playing what the distribution companies are currently offering, film culture also looks back and forward, it accompanies and rounds off and finds niches.
