Berlin (dpa) – The current wave of Empress Sisi is pouring into the year 2023: in March it should arrive at the cinema “Sisi & Ich” with Sandra Hüller and Susanne Wolff. The film is the new work of Frauke Finsterwalder, who released the ensemble film “Finsterworld” in 2013. “Sisi & I” begins as a satire and ends “in the deep abyss of the human soul,” said the news agency responsible . As the lady-in-waiting Irma, in a sort of aristocratic community in Greece-far from Vienna and Emperor Franz Joseph-Hüller (“Toni Erdmann”) she falls in love with the mature and charismatic Empress Elisabeth, who lives her freedom, which is played by Wolff.
Finsterwalder wrote the script again together with her husband, the writer Christian Kracht (“1979”, “Faserland”, “Eurotrash”). Filming took place in Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Malta. The theatrical release is announced for March 16 in Germany and Switzerland. Other roles include Georg Friedrich, Stefan Kurt, Tom Rhys Harries, Sophie Hutter, Angela Winkler and Johanna Wokalek.
By the way, 2023 is the 125th death anniversary of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria – pop culture mostly referred to as Sissi, historically correct Sisi. She was assassinated in Geneva in 1898.
The RTL series “Sisi” was released in 2021, the second season of which will now be available on RTL+ in December and will also be shown on linear television in the years to come. Marie Kreutzer’s film “Corsage” was shown in cinemas in the summer. The German Netflix series “Die Kaiserin” (international: “The Empress”) was released at the end of September and enjoyed international success. It is also expected to continue in 2023.
A cult that hovers over all these Sisi textiles in German-speaking countries are the films of the 1950s “Sissi”, “Sissi – the young empress” and “Sissi – the fateful years of an empress” with Romy Schneider, which will be screened again this year at Christmas on ARD -TV broadcast.
