Filling Private Pools and Washing Cars Restricted as Drought Looms in France

The French government gave prefects the power to impose restrictions on the filling of private swimming pools with drinking water. The measure is a result of the drought that is looming this summer in the country. “I urge the prefects to be vigilant. Prefects will be able to limit the use of water for non-priority purposes,” said French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

She specified that, more specifically, it is about “filling private pools and washing cars”. Meteo-France has declared 2022 the hottest year on record. Also, a 25% rainfall deficit was noted during the year.

The drought led to the fact that in 2022, about 700 settlements in France occasionally faced a complete lack of drinking water. The authorities allow the situation to worsen in 2023. According to their estimates, if no restrictive measures are taken, the number of municipalities that will experience a shortage of drinking water could triple.
