Injecting fillers can lead to tissue death and even blindness. Erasmus MC researchers have come to this conclusion research to the frequency of this type of complication.
When a filler, usually hyaluronic acid, is accidentally injected into a blood vessel, it can become blocked and the skin tissue or optic nerve dies.
According to the researchers, dying of skin tissue worldwide occurs in 1 in 6600 filler injections. It also occurs in the Netherlands, where an estimated 150,000 filler injections take place annually.
Fillers on the nose
Complications of this kind can be prevented. Injecting the ultrasound-guided filler would help. Furthermore, if you get there early, doctors can dissolve the incorrectly sprayed filler by introducing an enzyme, hyalonuridase, which makes the blood vessel transparent again.
“It is important that ultrasounds are checked beforehand where the blood vessels run so that they cannot be hit by injection,” says dermatologist Peter Velthuis. “We see that this complication mainly occurs in Asia, because fillers are often injected on the nose and therefore close to the eye.”
The research was published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, a renowned scientific journal in this field.
