Fillers and botox more popular than ever; also more abuse

NOS newstoday, 10:31

The number of people undergoing cosmetic surgery has increased dramatically in recent years. This is evident from research by Erasmus MC Rotterdam. For example, in 2019, 250,000 Botox treatments were performed in the Netherlands, and by 2022 that number had increased to 550,000. The number of filler treatments has also increased: from 162,000 in 2019 to 294,000 in 2022.

Tom Decates, cosmetic doctor and researcher at Erasmus MC, says that the increase in the number of cosmetic procedures is largely due to social media, such as TikTok and Instagram. “So you see something about Botox and fillers and you get that all the time. Then you also get offers from high-end clinics that are not as strict with the laws and regulations,” says Decates. The impact of this cannot be properly assessed yet, the doctor says.

Only people who have completed medical training and are on the BIG (Individual Health Care Professions) register are authorized to perform fillings and other injections. But there are still people who work without a permit, previous research showed.

The skin died off

Due to the popularity of cosmetic procedures, treatments are being offered in more and more places, even by people who have not received training for this, says Decates. “Hundreds are thinking: I’ll do this on the side for a while. And I don’t think things are going very well there.”

According to the cosmetic doctor, there are many examples of procedures where things have gone wrong. Such as someone whose cheek skin has died after having fillers inserted into their nose.

People who go wrong can consult about problems at the Erasmus MC, which opened twelve years ago. Decates sees that he is getting busier there. “Our wait times have gone up to three to six months.”

According to him, many benefits could be achieved, especially in the field of information. “I started a TikTok channel as an influencer, because that’s where you reach the people who want this and then we try to educate about cosmetic medicine.” Decates also says: “If things will go well, he will face you. Then you will be tired for life, both physically and mentally. And we shouldn’t want that.”

The study of the number of cosmetic procedures is done every three years. The latest figures are from 2019 to 2022. These figures were recently published in a scientific journal.
