Filipinos celebrated the Araw ng Kagitingan or the Day of Valor on April 9 to honor the heroism of soldiers who fought in World War II and those who served in the post-war period. In Iloilo, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand to pay tribute to the soldiers who fought for freedom during WWII. World War II veterans were also honored during the ceremony, and their contributions in fighting for the country’s freedom were recognized.

Meanwhile, in Metro Manila, President Rodrigo Duterte led the commemoration of the Day of Valor at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City. The President emphasized the indomitable spirit of Filipinos, which he said is a trait that has helped the country overcome various challenges.

Various government agencies and organizations also marked the Day of Valor with various activities. The Department of National Defense called on Filipinos to continue serving the country and to uphold the values of honor, courage and patriotism. The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office held a virtual program featuring testimonies from WWII veterans.

Historian Jose Victor Torres noted that the Day of Valor serves as a reminder of Filipinos’ resilience during WWII. Despite being outnumbered and having limited resources, Filipino soldiers and civilians fought bravely against foreign invaders. Torres said that the heroism displayed during the war should inspire Filipinos to overcome current challenges and continue to work towards a better future.

Vice President Leni Robredo also issued a statement in honor of the Day of Valor, urging Filipinos to honor fallen heroes and embrace bravery. Robredo said that the country’s heroes have paved the way for a brighter future, and that Filipinos should strive to continue their legacy by serving the country with honor and courage.

The Day of Valor is one of the most significant holidays in the Philippines, commemorating the bravery of Filipino soldiers and civilians during World War II. The holiday is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country’s freedom, and serves as an inspiration for Filipinos to continue working towards a brighter future.
