Filipino (65) in New York kicked up on the sidewalk: ‘Nobody did anything’

The victim was released from hospital on Tuesday. She suffered serious injuries, according to American media, but details are not known. The identity of the 65-year-old woman has not been made public.

“She could have been my mother,” said mayoral candidate Andrew Yang. He is the son of Taiwanese immigrants. Yang advises Asian-American residents to walk the streets together as much as possible, for protection.

Shooting in massage parlors

Two weeks ago, eight people were shot dead in the city of Atlanta, six of them of Asian descent. According to the police, the 21-year-old suspect stated that he had no racist motive. He is said to have attacked the massage parlors because of his sex addiction. But according to the Asian community in America, racism most likely played a role in the attack.

Stop AAPI Hate, an advocacy group for Asian Americans, writes that nearly 3,800 racist incidents were reported between March 2020 and February 2021. This concerns, for example, name-calling and physical abuse. According to the organization, the number is only a fraction of all incidents.

Subway grip in subway

33 violent incidents with a possible racist motive have been committed in New York this year. That is three times as many as around the same time last year, the police report.

Another video surfaced this week of another assault on an Asian American. The victim was beaten and held in a stranglehold on a moving subway. The man eventually fell unconscious and the assailant ran away without anyone intervening. In this case, passengers on the train yelled for the attacker to let go of him.
