Filipa Patão Criticizes Refereeing in Women’s Football: VAR Is Not Enough

Filipa Patão: «VAR is not enough to improve our refereeing»

After Benfica’s defeat against Sporting, Filipa Patão, the Eagles’ coach, harshly criticized the refereeing and highlighted her team’s 2nd half:

“The three teams have to improve, urgently. For the common good. We want fast-paced football, with fewer fouls. I don’t like focusing on referees or saying that we lost or won because of that. Women’s football has to evolve. In the Champions League we managed spent 90 minutes with few fouls, we reached the BPI League and there were fouls after fouls. Then we made mistakes, to try to compensate, but that’s not all. We have things to improve, Sporting too, but VAR is not enough to improve our performance. our refereeing. It’s not about us losing, it’s about the beauty of the game. There were a lot of fans here and then the game is always stopped. It’s not the best for our women’s football”, he stated.

And he continued: “About the game, we didn’t do well in the 1st half and Sporting took advantage of the opportunities. I take back our weak 1st half, the spaces were there, as we had seen and shown the players. But there are less good days, when we don’t we made the best decisions. But I take away the team’s reaction in the 2nd half, even with the number of games in their legs, they fought, ran and it was an impeccable 2nd half. Sporting went there once, made it 3-1 and that affected us. canceling the 3-2 was more complicated, because with that goal I believe that in the end we would have avoided defeat”.
