It was in January this year that the former AIK and Sirius player Filip Rogic moved to another part of the world, to play a new type of football.
He signed for Thai side Buriram United. After a six-month adventure, it is now clear that he is leaving.
– The rules there are a little different. You can have five foreigners and three of them can be part of the squad. I guess they want to sign a new player and then someone has to go. They wanted to loan me out at first, but then we ended up finding this solution, to break the contract. It turned out well for all parties, he tells Fotbollskanalen.
The 30-year-old explains that he entered with the attitude that there could be a premature end.
– I know how the football industry works and I was aware that they had changed a lot of players back and forth. I knew it, even though I had signed up two years ago. You want to be somewhere where you get to play, and it turned out to be 10-11 out of maybe 20 games.
– I played half and was out of the squad the other half. If they had said they wanted me to come back, I would have. I thought it was very good. It was fun to win and see how football works in Asia.
The game there is something different to what people in Sweden are possibly used to, says Rogic. Individualism, speed and changes characterize the sport in the country.
– It can be changeover after changeover after changeover. And, yes you know, with the heat at 35-40 degrees it was a challenge, he says, laughing.
A mere six months at the club – but Rogic got to celebrate big. The midfielder was involved in winning a league title and two domestic cup dents.
– It was fun. You notice that it is a very big club in Thailand. Wherever you went and played a match, there was always a large crowd. All the support you have received, it felt genuine. Everyone loves the players and the club. It was great to be part of this journey, even if it was only six months.
– My wife didn’t go along, so at the same time it was actually nice to come home.
Nice to come home to Sweden, you say. What happens now?
– We’ll see. My agent is working on some solution. There have been a few offers, but nothing that I feel like I want to take right away. On July 15, I am completely free contractually. Then we’ll see what comes up.
– I am open to most things. We have actually looked abroad. I would like to take something outside Sweden again. But you never know what happens in football.
What kind of bids have been received and what do you prefer?
– From different clubs all over Europe actually. My agent works widely, I have not said no to any country. But I don’t want to go into any details, you and everyone else will see that later.
– But you know yourself, you enjoy being in the sun, that’s for sure.
How is the contact with two of your most recent clubs, AIK and Sirius?
– I have of course been in contact with my old clubs, but now a lot is happening and everyone is changing sports managers and coaches. AIK, for example, has changed most things. I have good contact with Ola (Andersson, head of sport at Sirius). And also some players in AIK and Henrik Jurelius (sports manager) who were there before. Are you thinking more about whether I want to move to Sweden and those clubs?
Yes, if applicable.
– Of course. Then you also want the clubs to want one. Then it is easier to want to come to a club. I had a good time in both AIK, Sirius and my other previous clubs. Now I’m going to take a long-awaited vacation with my wife, whom I haven’t seen in a very long time, then I’ll just have to sit down and see what’s available.
Filip Rogic has represented clubs such as Östersunds FK, AFC, Örebro SK and Orenburg. He was in the aforementioned AIK between 2020 and 2021 and for Sirius he played during the 2022 season.
