Filip: Pavel Rychetský should resign

When, on the occasion of the national holiday on 28 October, President Zeman awarded the President of the Constitutional Court Pavel Rychetský the Order of Tomáš Garrigu Masaryk, the second highest state award, he evidently indicated that he was informed and at the same time bet that at least the remnants of Mr. Rychetský were preserved. justice, reason and decency and that he is able to interpret correctly what is at stake here.

Anyone who is at least a little familiar with the highest levels of our politics, where these are often only subtle symbolic indications, knew very well that the President had made it clear to Rychetský that the time had come. The President quite rightly assessed the clear signals about the loss of the ability of the President of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic to handle a demanding position and about the danger that he would personally disable and compromise “his office”.

Unfortunately, Pavel Rychetský was no longer in a situation where he would be able to correctly evaluate the subtle hint of the Castle. He did not fulfill the expectation that he would abdicate himself, accept thanks and, above all, that he would release the position to the more capable – and everything will be put into a state as it should be, as befits and belongs, at least in this form.

It is not a shame for a constitutional judge to run out of power with age.

Unfortunately, the president’s signal came at a time when the declining mental abilities of the president were no longer enough to evaluate the situation when the rate of loss of justice and self-reflection of Pavel Rychetský exceeded the tolerable limit. Unfortunately, he confirmed this with his recent stupid statements about constitutional officials and hateful words against the Communist Party, which would not pass even to a young, inexperienced assistant district judge.

In this way, Rychetský compromised not only himself and his work so far, but above all the institution he heads.

Now we can only wait that he may still be lucky enough to have a bright moment in which he realizes what he has done and will quickly resign as President of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic.
