Spanish newspaper Sport said that Real Madrid has already contacted coach Mauricio Pochettino, the candidate to succeed Zinedine Zidane as captain.
Zidane is on a hot plate after two consecutive losses that caused him to fall to fourth place in the Spanish League standings and to occupy third place in Group Two before the final round of the Champions League.
Real Madrid fell 2-1 against Deportivo Alaves before losing in Ukraine to Shakhtar Donetsk with two unanswered goals.
Immediately after the defeat against Shakhtar, Zidane stressed his adherence to his position as Real Madrid’s coach, but the newspaper, close to the team, said that the club had begun to think about the French successor and that the leading candidates were Pochettino and Raul Gonzalez, the former Merenigi star and current coach of the club’s reserve team.
Pochettino has not coached a team since he left Tottenham in November 2019.
Real Madrid is preparing for a strong match against its host Sevilla on Saturday in the 12th round of the Spanish League.
