Negotiations between Benfica and Edinson Cavani collapsed, weeks after the name of the international Uruguay player was linked to the Eagles team.
The Portuguese newspaper “Record” reported that Benfica had already informed the player of not agreeing to meet his financial demands, and thus the contract was not completed.
Benfica club manager Nuno Gaiuso said on Friday: “Whether Cavani comes or not, we have high-class players, the players must have the desire to come to us.”
Cavani, 33, is not affiliated with any club at the moment, after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.
For his part, Benfica is working to strengthen its ranks, after the return of coach Jorge Jesus to lead the team.
The Portuguese capital club has already signed Brazilian Everton from Gremio, and with compatriot Pedrinho from Corinthians.
Benfica also brought in German Luka Waldschmidt from Freibork and Jan Vertonghen in a free transfer deal after the end of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur.
