Magdy Abu Freikha, president of the Egyptian Basketball Federation, believes that it is very difficult to cancel the current season despite the delay of two months due to the Corona virus.
Abu Freikha stressed that the resumption of the activity will not take place without the approval of the state in the end, represented by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Olympic Committee, and the Ministry of Health.
The Council of Ministers has announced the gradual resumption of sporting activity in Egypt beginning in mid-June.
Abu Freikha said, via live broadcast of the official page of the Egyptian Federation: “The cancellation of competitions is out of the question, as the season is about to end.”
“There remains one or two games in the men’s league between Al-Ahly and Al-Jazeera, and the winner faces Al-Ittihad in the final. As for the cup, we reached the quarter-finals and it can be finished in 4 days, and there are few games for women.”
The president of the Egyptian Federation stressed, “Talking about canceling the competition is very difficult, the clubs incurred huge expenses, and there is a great effort made by technical and administrative equipment and players, and not completing the season is something other than sports in general.”
He continued: “The return of the activity will not take place unless with the approval of the state represented by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Health and the Olympic Committee. The union is committed to precautionary measures, and the medical committee submitted a proposal under study, and it will be sent after approval to the ministry, and we are ready to resume the competitions.”
He continued: “The completion of the league will be in accordance with the requirements that were made from the beginning of the season, and these conditions will not be affected.”
Abu Freikha said: “We had a plan to prepare the Sunni teams, but the outbreak of the Corona virus stopped everything, and as soon as the activity resumed, the four teams would be assembled and prepared at the highest level for competitions continually and internationally.”
The president of the Egyptian Federation completed his statements, “The competition was intense this season in various basketball sectors, and the broadcasting of televisions contributed to increasing interest in the game, and the follow-up of its matches, and the union won praise internally and externally after the concrete development at the level of basketball.”
