This Fiji-Portugal at the Toulouse Stadium was the 40th and final match of the group stage of this 2023 Rugby World Cup. The Portuguese achieved a feat by bringing down the Fijians (23-24). The men of the Pacific nevertheless qualify for the quarter-finals.
The Portuguese feast
As since the start of the World Cup, Portugal was fearless against Fiji. Patrice Lagisquet’s men, supported by an impressive Lusitanian community at the Stadium, looked their opponent in the eyes. 3-3 at the break and even seven points ahead at the hour mark (10-17) thanks to two tries scored. The Fijians chased the score until the 68th minute of play (17-17). They finally took the lead less than ten minutes from time (20-17 in the 74th then 23-17 in the 76th). But a try in the 79th minute from Columérin Rodrigo Marta offered a historic victory to the Portuguese.
The Fijians will see the quarters
Authors of a poor performance, the Fijians still provide the essentials. They needed a simple defensive bonus to qualify for the quarter-finals. They will therefore meet England in Marseille on Sunday October 15. A result which at the same time eliminates Australia.
The quarter-finals will take place next Saturday and Sunday. The cities of Marseille and Paris are the two cities which will host two meetings each.
