Figures on the coronavirus in the Netherlands in seven visualisations NOW

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) publishes an overview every day with figures on the situation surrounding the corona virus in the Netherlands. NU.nl brought together most of the figures known to date in seven visualisations.

Deaths rose to 434

The number of people who died in the Netherlands from the consequences of the coronavirus increased by 78 on Thursday to 434. The number of infections reported to GGDs rose by 1,019 to 7,431. Hospitals added 315 new corona patients, which means that 2,151 patients have now been admitted or have been admitted.

Nobody under 50 died

Most reported patients are aged 75 to 79 years, according to RIVM. Most persons who died from the effects of the coronavirus were between 80 and 84 years old. In addition, no one under the age of fifty has died from the virus.

Of those admitted to or hospitalized, nearly 40 percent of patients were 75 years of age or older. About one in ten corona patients in the hospital is under the age of fifty.

Men seem to get sicker than women

Men and women get coronavirus about as often. However, the figures also show that relatively many men die from COVID-19. The same applies to patients who end up in the hospital. Nearly two-thirds of both hospital admissions and deaths. We explained why this is article.

30 percent of infections in North Brabant

As is known, Noord-Brabant was the hardest hit by the corona virus. Nearly 30 percent of people who have tested positive for the virus live in that province. After North Brabant, South Holland (1,042) and North Holland (1,029) have the most infections. Friesland (71) and Drenthe (72) report the least infections.

More than half have underlying condition (s)

More than half (55 percent) of the corona patients in the hospital have one or more underlying conditions. About the same percentage is reflected in the number of deaths. The most commonly reported underlying conditions are cardiovascular disease (28 percent), chronic lung disease (16 percent) and diabetes (12 percent).

To date, five pregnant women with the coronavirus have been hospitalized. To date, no pregnant women have died from the effects of the virus.

761 corona patients in intensive care

The number of corona patients in Dutch intensive care units is Thursday increased to 761, reports the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC). That is 117 more than Wednesday, when there were 644 people with COVID-19 in intensive care (IC). It is again the biggest increase yet.

Pressure on IC capacity continues to increase

Where according to RIVM there is a slowdown in the spread of the coronavirus in the Netherlands, the intensive care departments are under pressure. Currently, almost three-quarters of ICUs are occupied by corona patients.

To relieve the pressure, the number of IC beds should be increased to 1,600 next week. In order to make optimal use of this capacity, various patients from the North Brabant fire have already been transferred to other provinces. Also are more respiratory machines required.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
