Figures for 2019: Tesla sells more electric cars than expected

The electric car maker Tesla made a final sprint in the fourth quarter – and thus just barely reached its annual target. In 2019, the company delivered 367,500 cars – and thus increased significantly.

Electric car manufacturer Tesla reached its sales targets in 2019 – to the surprise of experts. The Silicon Valley company delivered a total of 367,500 vehicles, landing at the lower end of its targeted sales of 360,000 to 400,000 cars.

In the fourth quarter alone, 112,000 Tesla were sold, analysts had only just under 105,000 of Elon Musk’s company. Of the 112,000 vehicles delivered between October and December, 92,550 were Model 3 vehicles, which start at $ 35,000. With this model, the company wants to conquer the mass market.

Expert: Problems in manufacturing overcome

The number of vehicles produced (just under 105,000) in the fourth quarter shows that Tesla has overcome its manufacturing problems, said analyst Jed Dorsheimer from investment bank Canaccord Genuity. Tesla’s shares rose noticeably before the stock market, analysts had expected significantly fewer deliveries.

“We continue to focus on expanding production in the United States and at our new facility in Shanghai,” said Tesla. The company launched the factory in China in less than a year and recently handed over the first Model 3 to employees there.

The plant is expected to have a capacity of 500,000 cars a year, but initially it is likely to produce significantly less. Tesla has high hopes for China, the largest car market in the world. Local importation can avoid high import duties.

Start of construction near Berlin in the first half of 2020

The carmaker is planning its first major European plant in Germany. The compact SUV Model Y is to be manufactured in Grünheide near Berlin from 2021. Construction on the 300-hectare site is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2020.
