On June 24, the International Skating Union (ISU) published a post on social networks on International Olympic Day without mentioning the winner of the women’s competition, Russia’s Anna Shcherbakova. In the photo gallery, she was replaced by the Japanese Kaori Sakamoto, who won the bronze. Shcherbakova reacted to the incident with the line “I sincerely believe that everyone is equal in sports.”

On March 1, the ISU banned Russians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Due to the sanctions, the athletes in 2022 could not take part in the adult world championship, as well as in the junior world championship. On June 7, the ISU extended the suspension of the Russians until further notice.
