Stadtwerke Offenbach is one of “Germany’s best” when it comes to sustainability – that was the result of a study commissioned by FOCUS Money. In order to illustrate this commitment with facts, a “Figure of the Month” is published regularly on the subject. In February 2023, the focus will be on the bicycle counting point at the port of Offenbach.

Number of the month February 2023

4,442,493 cyclists were registered at the counting station on the Main Cycle Path in the Port of Offenbach from May 1, 2016 to December 31, 2022. This considerable number may be rounded up, because the counting station was out of service for three short periods of time due to construction work or a power failure.

The initiator for the counting station was the public utility company OPG Offenbacher Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, which is developing and marketing the Port of Offenbach on behalf of the city. Their goal was to make cycling visible to the public and to promote the environmentally friendly means of transport. With success: the number of cyclists increased continuously, and the demonstrably high values were a major reason for launching the Bike Offenbach cycle road project from 2018 to 2022.

Bicycle traffic has increased significantly

The latest data also show how much cycling has increased in Offenbach: from the end of September 2016 to the end of January 2017, the counter registered 90,092 cyclists on the Main Cycle Path – from the end of September 2022 to the end of January 2023 there were 150,353. The peak value in one day was measured on July 21, 2020 with 6,261 cyclists, the weekly average was a total of 13,039 cyclists.

In 2022, the state of Hesse implemented 270 permanent counting points for bicycle traffic across the state. Seven of these were built in the city of Offenbach, including on the bicycle axis along Sprendlinger Landstraße to Neu-Isenburg and on the new bicycle streets in Luisenstraße and Lämmerspieler Weg. Together they registered more than 300,000 cyclists from the end of September 2022 to the beginning of February 2023. All these figures underline the need and the declared goal of the city to further expand and improve the cycling infrastructure in Offenbach.
