CINCINNATI, KOMPAS.com – Name Lee Wong suddenly went viral, after the video of him taking off his clothes at a meeting and showing off his war wounds, was widespread on social media.
Lee Wong did this at a meeting of the city of West Chester, Cincinnati, the state of Ohio, United States (US), on Tuesday (23/3/2021).
The action was carried out in order to show his loyalty to “Uncle Sam’s country”. He got these scars while serving in the US military.

“I’m going to show you what patriotism looks like, and what questions about patriotism should be,” Lee Wong said, unbuttoning his shirt.
“This is proof. This comes from my service in the US military. Isn’t this patriot enough not yet?” he quipped to protest the sentiment anti-Asian in America that is happening.

Launch NPR on Saturday (27/3/2021), Lee Wong has lived in the US since he graduated from high school.
Lee Wong was a student there in the 1970s, and was once attacked by white people while making insults anti-Asian sentiment.
Another discrimination he experienced was that his application to become a police officer was rejected, and he was ridiculed by officers who called him “Chinaman”.
He has often had the same treatment in recent years, and at the meeting last Tuesday he let out his frustration.
“People question my patriotism, that I don’t look quite American,” said Wong, pointing at his face.
“I want to show you something,” Lee Wong continued.
Then, the other four council members saw Lee Wong who was the chairman of the board, taking off his clothes.
“I’m not afraid. I don’t have to live in fear, intimidation, or humiliation.”
He proceeded to take off his tie, unbutton his shirt, and the 69-year-old said aloud:
“Here’s proof,” as he stood up, lifted his undershirt, and revealed a large black scar on his chest.
“This comes from my service to the US military. Now, is this patriot enough?”
The video of Lee Wong lifting this shirt went viral on Twitter in numbers views above 4.2 million until Sunday (28/3/2021).
Lee Wong’s action comes a week after the shooting of three massage parlors in Atlanta that killed eight people, six of whom were of Asian descent.

Several cities reported an increase in cases of hate crimes against Asians in 2000. One survey reported incidents of harassment and discrimination related to the coronavirus.
Lee Wong is a 20 -year veteran in the U.S. Army. To Cincinnati Inquirer he admits that he doesn’t plan to lift his clothes, but he thinks this is a good time to remember what was going on there.
After showing his scar, Lee Wong sat down again and buttoned his shirt.
“Prejudice is hatred. And that hatred can be changed. We are human beings. We have to be better, closer to each other.”
“Because we are one human being on this Earth,” concluded Lee Wong.
