HANOI, KOMPAS.com – Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the figure behind the success Vietnam handle Covid-19, appointed as president in Hanoi.
Nguyen previously served as prime minister for five years. In his hands, the country’s economy began to increase.

Following a secret meeting held on Monday (5/4/2021), Nguyen won the most votes out of 500 members of the national council.
“This is a feat he deserves,” said Nguyen Khac Giang, an expert on Vietnam politics at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Southeast Asian country operates in an authoritarian manner, with the center of power in the hands of the communist party.
The party is led by the secretary general, president and prime minister with the most important decisions being held by 18 politburo members.
In the past decade, there have been two leadership transitions with Nguyen Phu Trong being re-elected as secretary general in January.
Nguyen Xuan Phuc became the only candidate after Phu Trong, who has been president since 2018, chose to step down.

The local national council previously stated that this was the first time the Vietnamese PM was sworn in as president.
After taking the oath of office, Nguyen said he felt “lucky and honored” in the position he held.

Giang said, the role that Nguyen would later only depend on the ceremonial affairs of the state.

Even so, his position would later be number two, so that he could become secretary general if Phu Trong resigned.
